Direct marketers need to embrace Facebook and SMS marketing if they want to reach the growing and powerful teen audience. This economically ascending portion of the millenial generation is the subject of a newly released study by Pew Research. Teen girls live on social media. Teen boys play video games. That's an oversimplification, but is a sample of the findings in the study on social media and app use among American teens. Not surprisingly 92% of those surveyed go online every day. Facebook is way out front for all teens, though internal variances occur by demographic. Email is not as...

The data driven marketing world has a new technology to help small businesses build relationships with their customers, including email. The retail payment platform Square has created Square Marketing; tools that allow small businesses to capture emails from cutomers who swipe on site. This is big since it has been challenging for proprietors to get verified addresses at checkout. The platform then facilitates segmentation and outreach as well as metrics for validating results. The benefit to Square is expansion into retail businesses that had eschewed such platforms while the benefit to...

Growth and health are improving but at a tepid pace. This may well be the new reality for the forseeable future. D&B’s Small Business Health Index declined 2.5 points in the February reporting period. D&B estimates U.S. businesses added 241,000 new non-farm jobs in February 2015. The business services segment continued to lead in employment gains. This is ahead of the latest figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics that reported a hiccup in this area for March, with non-farm payrol increasing only 126,00. It should be kept in mind that these increases are seldom linear. A small...

No Blocking. No Throttling. No Paid Prioritization. Those are the three "bright line" rules that sum up the FCC rules on net neutrality. Broadband Internet access has been re-classified as a telecommunications service under Title II of the Communications Act and Section 706 of the Telecommunications Act. Yet there is room for evolution and accommodation of services (forbearance) that do not use the public Internet like VoIP. All in all the 400 page document throws a gauntlet down to the many factions that take issue with it. From "death of the internet" proclamations to "champion of the...

Two powerful women met to discuss how to improve the job done by the USPS. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp and newly sworn-in Postmaster General Megan Brennan met to allow Sen. Heitkamp an opportunity to push harder for improved mail service in rural America, particularly for her constituents in North Dakota. With a robust energy exploration industry feeding population growth in remote areas, people with buying power will be responding to direct mail offers for the things they want and need. Despite their isolation, Sen. Heitkamp believes 21st century America should serve them as well as those in densely...

FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai in a news release just published revealed results of a recent outside survey of Americans regarding whether the White House plan for regulating the Internet was either understood, and if so whether or not it was supported. The results were quite telling. To begin, only 1 in 4 respondents knew what the term "net neutrality" meant. The majority did not want the government to use its authority to regulate the Internet like a phone utility. 85% supported a delay in any action until full disclosure is made to the public regarding the details of the plan. Of note, the...
