Retail Trade Industry Data

Retail Industry Email Lists

The retail industry includes entities doing business at the point of exchange between resellers and end users. Retail trade establishments are the final destination for finished products, as well as personal services, plus social and recreational opportunities. Establishments come in all sizes, from standalone mom and pops – 98.5% of retail businesses have fewer than 50 employees (NRF Impact Report pE-3, Table E-4) – to global behemoths like Walmart, Target, Amazon, etc.

In all its forms, through its various channels, the retail industry touches nearly everyone in some way. Like all industries, retail trade is made up of companies that need products and services that enable them to stay competitive. High quality retail industry mailing lists powered by superior data is key to successfully engaging with any and all verticals in the sector.

What Businesses Does The Retail Trade Industry Include?

The industry comprises both store retailers (who operate from fixed physical locations, dealing with customers in person), and non-store retailers (who sell to customers via direct response, door to door, vending, and temporary locations). Transactions include products and services for either business or household use. They may add value to include installation, service, and repair. They may also include ongoing subscriptions and re-supply agreements. These business models increasingly exist in combination, particularly brick-and-mortar/e-commerce hybrids.

How Big Is The Retail Trade Industry?

As of 2018, the retail trade industry supported about one in four American workers. Total retail sales in 2019 were $5.47 trillion. Due to the pandemic, sales are expected to fall to $4.89 trillion for 2020, but grow to reach $5.94 trillion by 2024.

The added value of retail trade overall in Q1 2020 represented $1.186 trillion, or 5.5% of GDP according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis (Table 5-5a). A recent NRF/PwC report (p9, Table 2) showed that as of 2018 there were 4,185,135 establishments in the retail trade sector representing 11.6% of the U.S. economy. Despite the loss of 2.1 million jobs in April, 2020 due to COVID-19, the nascent jobs recovery and ensuing return to growth of the retail trade sector makes this sector worthy of direct marketing attention. This thesis is supported by the BEA estimate of Corporate Profits for the retail trade industry for Q2 2020 of $205 billion (p19, Table 10, Line 29), and the Census Bureau Retail Sales Report for September 2020 indicating a rise in retail trade sales of 8.2% YoY.

What Do Retail Trade Businesses Need?

Retail trade businesses exist in highly competitive sectors. They share many of the same needs across retail trade sectors. Grocery stores and auto repair shops need to keep good books and turn on the lights. Hardware stores and beverage marts need websites and local marketing. Furniture or electronics businesses need inventory management and supply chain systems. However trendy or bare bones a selling space may be, access, egress, customer comfort, and safety are factors that must be addressed. Direct marketing to any or all of the retail sectors requires knowledge of and sensitivity to their particular needs, plus well-targeted retail mailing lists.
